Does Traditional Advertising Still Work?
Last Updated on March 23, 2022 by Rachel Leone
How do you stand out in a busy digital advertising landscape? These 5 traditional advertising methods still work like a charm!
1
Promotional Products
I am slightly biased, but promotional products have been shown to help businesses gain favor with prospects and improve brand awareness. Imprinted products are memorable, held on to for long periods of time, and typically create positive feelings towards a brand. When you consider cost per impression, a great promotional product can be extremely cost-effective.
2
Direct Mail
Mail is one of the oldest forms of advertising – and it still works in today’s digital marketing landscape. If you're like me, you receive so much junk mail and bills that every other type of mail gets opened immediately. Effective direct mail pieces are designed to pique the reader’s attention. This is accomplished using a few techniques.
- Interesting copywriting and a targeted call to action.
- An amazing deal, offer, or coupon.
- Memorable or disruptive graphic design.
- Or my favorite - Lumpy Mail combines mail and promotional products and is designed to intrigue recipients and reward them for opening.

Hand-Held Signs
Hand-held signs, or what’s known in the industry as sign spinners are a simple form of outdoor advertising. These old fashioned and cost-effective signs grab a customer’s attention. They're easy to create and available in many different shapes and colors.

Slogans
Pop quiz hotshot, can you finish these 3 popular slogans?
- Melts in your mouth, not...
- 15 minutes can save you...
- America runs on...
When done well and used repeatedly, slogans can be one of the best ways to increase brand awareness and stay top of mind with customers. Slogans and taglines have been helping to sell products and services since advertising began. Make sure to put time into creating your slogan so customers remember who you are and what you do! The beauty of slogans is they can go anywhere too.

Coupons
Humans love two things. Saving money and finding great deals (see Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Prime Day, and Singles Day). Coupons are another old school marketing technique that takes advantage of our instinctual desire to save money and hunt for deals. In some studies, it's been shown that some consumers will spend more on a brand that offers a coupon, than a competitor with a lower price. The act of saving, printing, or electronically flashing a coupon keeps a consumer connected to a brand and increases the likelihood of future purchases.
Conclusion
If your business is relying on a digital-only approach, you're leaving potential money and customers on the table. Great marketers know that a mix of digital and traditional advertising nets you the best results. Traditional advertising methods stand out more than ever in our increasingly digital world, and that's what I call opportunity.
